Unexpected Fish Format: Mackerel Hummus Bowl

Unexpected Fish Format: Mackerel Hummus Bowl

What happens when a fish craving and a hummus craving walk into the same kitchen at the same time?

I had leftover plain baked mackerel from the night before.

No seasoning, nothing fancy. Just fish. And I was standing there thinking — I do not want to eat fish and salad separately like a sad desk lunch. I wanted hummus. I wanted protein. I wanted multiple textures in the same bite. I wanted something that felt like a full experience, not a compromise.

And then I looked at the mackerel and thought — that flesh is incredibly tender. That is absolutely blendable.

Ten minutes later I had something I had never made before and absolutely loved.

Here's what I put together:

  • Freshly baked plain mackerel, cleaned from bones

  • Canned chickpeas

  • Fresh lemon juice

  • Salt

  • Turmeric

  • Red pepper

  • Black pepper

  • Fresh parsley, chopped

  • Jarred roasted red peppers

  • Sweet corn from a can

  • Pitted olives, sliced

  • A little extra whole chickpeas folded in at the end

Here's what I did:

  • Blended the mackerel with the chickpeas, lemon juice, salt, turmeric, red pepper, and black pepper until smooth. Tasted it. Nearly lost my mind.

  • Chopped the parsley, sliced the olives, drained the corn, roughly chopped the roasted peppers.

  • Folded everything into the blended base.

  • Added the extra chickpeas for texture.

  • Topped with a fresh parsley sprig because it deserved it.

Here's what happened:

Golden, creamy, bold, layered. The mackerel completely disappears into the base but leaves behind this deep, rich, almost smoky flavour that makes the chickpeas taste like they've been doing something much more interesting than sitting in a can. The roasted peppers add sweetness. The olives add brine. The corn adds little bursts of something bright and unexpected. Every bite has at least three things happening at once. Exactly what I wanted. Nothing like what I planned.

Dare to try it differently:

  • Swap mackerel for sardines, tuna, or any leftover cooked fish you have.

  • Add tahini to the blend if you want it closer to traditional hummus.

  • Throw in sun-dried tomatoes instead of roasted peppers.

  • Use capers instead of olives for a sharper bite.

  • Serve it as a dip with crackers or raw vegetables instead of eating it as a bowl.

  • Add a soft boiled egg on top if you want to take the protein situation even further.

This is what happens when you stop asking what you're supposed to make and start asking what you actually want. The kitchen always has an answer. You just have to be willing to blend a fish.
